Why Consider Cloth Diapering?
Best Comfort for Baby
Cloth diapers are usually made of natural fibres, which are softer than the plastics used in disposables. They also provide better breathability and circulation, so your baby should experience less irritating chafing or heat/moisture build-up, both of which can lead to rashes.
Save Money
Using 5-10 pieces of disposable diapers for costing between 25-70 cents for 3 years (i.e. ~$3,200)!
By contrast, 20 such disposable diapers over 3 years will only cost ~$900! You can even sell them off after that or keep for the next baby.
Save Our Earth
Instead of sending ~2,200 pieces of disposable diapers to the landfills every year, consider doing your part to conserve our environment.
Cloth diapers are best cleaned in washing machines with a full load, so each time you run a cycle, your electricity and water use will is naturally maximised too.
Frequently Asked Questions on Diaper Rental
1. Is it really hygienic to rent diapers?
Our diapers are entirely stripped and sanitised once they come back from renting, so any leftover ammonia gets oxidised and any stubborn microbes get killed completely.
There therefore is not much difference in the level of hygiene between the diaper which you had washed after your child soiled vs. a diaper rented from us as we have utmost faith in our wash routine.
2. How many types of cloth diapers are there actually, and do I need to rent all of them to try?
There are 6 main types of diapering systems:
- All-in-One (AIO) diapers
- Inserts and covers are generally attached to each other
- Usually the design provides a pocket of sort for optional additional boosters to be added if needed
- eg. the Mother-ease Wizard Uno
- All-in-Two (AI2) diapers
- Inserts and covers can be separated for washing, but snapped together for wearing
- This allows for covers to be reused more than once if not too soiled
- eg. the Mother-ease Wizard Duo
- Fitted diapers
- The "fitted diaper" usually refers to the whole diaper which is the absorbent layer
- Some fitted diapers can be worn without covers for short periods to provide for more breathability
- Covers can be worn on top of the fitted diaper to provide waterproofing
- eg. the Mother-ease Sandy's Diapers
- Flats or Pre-folds
- The "flat" or "pre-fold" usually refers only to the absorbent layer
- These are usually large pieces of cloth which can be folded to provide a customised fit and absorbency preferred
- Covers can be worn on top of the flats to provide waterproofing
- Pocket diapers
- Inserts and covers usually sold separately, where the "pocket" usually refers only to waterproof cover
- Pull-Up diapers
- AIOs or Pockets designed to with elastics to allow for the whole diaper to be pulled up and down while the child is standing up
- Some have fully elastic waists (much easier for child to pull up and down on their own) while others have side snaps (usually require adult to help with pulling up and down)
- Some provide full absorbencies of usual diapers while others provide less absorbency as they are meant to be worn as trainers to catch accidents while the child is potty-training
- eg. the Mother-ease Bedwetter Pants (full absorbency) and the Mother-ease Big Kid Training Pants (trainers)
Our Baby Planner will speak with you to understand what your family's preferences and goals are before we agree on which diapers and systems to send you, so rest assured it does not need to get too overwhelming!
3. How should I wash the diapers during the rental period?
Our Baby Planner will go through this with you, but these are the simple steps:
1. Dry Pail with lots of big holes for Ventilation
- For cloth diapers with pee, just leave them in the dry pail for 1-2 days until you are ready to do the first wash
- For poop which can be rolled off, simply roll off the solid pieces into the toilet bowl and put the soiled cloth diaper into the dry pail
- For poop which cannot be rolled off, use a bidet spray to blast most of the poop off the cloth diaper over a toilet bowl and put the soiled diaper into the dry pail
- When on the go, store your dirty diapers in good quality wet bags before emptying the wet bags into your dry pail when you reach home
2. First Wash (aka Pre-Wash)
This should be done at 40-60oC, for 30-60mins (choose a short cycle on your washing machine with the highest possible spin speed)
- To be done every 1-2 days, but within 24 hours if you have any diapers that have been worn for more than 5hrs straight
- Use ½ ‘heavily soiled’ dose of detergent
- Washing machine should only contain soiled cloth diapers ONLY (the machine does not need to be full)
3. Back to Dry Pail
This step is only necessary if you are not doing the Main Wash immediately. You may opt to have a 2nd "clean" dry pail if you do not do a main wash every day and do not want freshly soiled diapers to "contaminate" these 80% clean diapers.
4. Second Wash (aka Main Wash)
This should be done at 40-60oC, for 2-4hours (choose a long cycle on your washing machine)
- To be done every 1-4 days (diapers need not be dry)
- ‘Heavily soiled’ dose of detergent
- You can add in other laundry items which are less than 60cm x 60cm in size (or use a washing net for items larger than this)
- Washing machine needs to be loosely full when dry. It should be ½-¾ full when wet
5. Dry the cloth diapers
You can choose either of 2 options - Line dry flat OR tumble dry on low heat in a dryer
- Do not hang diapers with elastics to dry as the elastics will stretch and loosen over time
- Do not bleach the diapers as this would void The Mother-ease Warranty.
