Must I Spend Hundreds of dollars on a Breastpump?

I happen to have a few issues which hinder my babies from having a good latch. These are: having short/inverted nipples, being more prone to lumps/blockages than most women, having relatively few “holes” from which my milk flows out from and having an oversupply. As such, I exclusively pumped for Baby#1 and pumped more than I latched the other two babies. However, even if you do not intend to latch your baby exclusively, it will probably be a good idea to buy a breastpump before you give birth as there may be instances you will need to pump.

The most dominant 2 breastpump brands in the market are still Medela and Spectra. However, there are increasingly many options for breastpumps available in Singapore. Most cost a few hundred dollars so this can be quite a big investment.

I am not affiliated in any way with any brands, but I’d like to share some solutions, which I only discovered with and after baby #3.

Portable Pumps with Tubings and Parts You are Used to

There is a very cheap but super functional brand of pumps which is a closed system pump that does not come with any batteries. It simply requires a connection to any USB power source (eg. a power bank, your laptop, the AC socket). Should you find the flange size or fit uncomfortable, it can be “hacked” it to fit either Medela or Spectra parts to suit your preference. Even with using brand new Medela (one of the most expensive brand in the market) parts to use with it, your full portable double electric pump set will still cost only ~$100!

Portable and/or Wearable Tubing-less and Wire-less Pumps

Also, the options for tube-less, wire-less hands-free pumping today are aplenty, and they are increasingly effective too! How I wish I had some of today’s options, at the price points today, when I had my babies. Did you know you can get a portable or wearable double electric fully tube-less and wire-less closed system pump which can empty well (phew! how many fab descriptors is that?!) at just $110-180?
